SIUT Students’ Volunteer Winter Program Concludes Today

Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) held a certificate distribution ceremony for 140 volunteer students. These students successfully completed a week-long, 30-hour community service program at the institute.

Purpose of the Program

The biannual volunteer program aims to build a sense of community service, empathy, and social responsibility in students. It is open to those studying at matriculation, intermediate, and O/A Level. SIUT intends for participants to become responsible and caring members of society as they begin their professional lives.

Learning Through Healthcare Exposure

During the program, students learned about real-world healthcare services. They were encouraged to show compassion toward underprivileged patients. The sessions included interactive lectures by SIUT experts on topics such as:

  • Kidney function, failure, and dialysis

  • Infection control and personal hygiene

  • Robotic surgery and urology

  • Organ donation

  • Liver disease and gastroenterology

  • Pediatric cardiology and heart disease

  • Echocardiography, diet, and nutrition

  • Psychology, patient safety, and quality assurance

  • Responsible use of media

Students also attended sessions at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC) to learn about ethical practices in healthcare. A dedicated lecture introduced them to SIUT’s digital library.

Hands-On Department Visits

Participants visited key departments to observe daily operations. These included:

  • Transplant services

  • Dialysis units

  • Robotic surgery

  • Nursing

  • Radiology and radiotherapy

  • Medical social welfare

Through direct interaction with patients, doctors, and paramedical staff, students gained insight into patient care and teamwork. They also visited the Maryam Bashir Dawood Children’s Hospital to see pediatric healthcare in action.

Program History and Impact

SIUT started the volunteer program in 2006. It runs during both summer and winter vacations. Over the years, more than 7,500 students have completed the program. Throughout their experience, participants learned about SIUT’s core mission: providing quality healthcare free of cost to all, without discrimination based on caste, color, creed, or financial status.

Closing Ceremony

The concluding ceremony was attended by parents, SIUT faculty members, and representatives of educational institutions. Students, their parents, and teachers praised the initiative, saying it helps reduce human suffering while promoting empathy, ethical values, and social awareness.
