The NPD Group has not released final numbers, but Microsoft’s head of Xbox Games Marketing has revealed which consoles came out on top. According to Aaron Greenberg, the Nintendo Switch sold the best in December 2017 in the United States.
As far as which console sold best between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Xbox beat the PS4 in sales, again in the United States. Greenberg detailed that the Xbox outsold the PS4 in December 2017 following the launch of the Xbox One X.
A month before, in November, the PlayStation 4 was the best selling platform. This was widely due to November featuring a nice discount for the PS4. In December, those deals were no longer available. The Xbox, however, saw discounts from November to December, which helped support sales.
Regardless of how well the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 did in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has them beat. The Nintendo Switch sold more than 4.8 million units in 10 months in the United States, making it the fastest selling home video game system of all time in the US. The Switch sold the best in December and unlike the consoles it competed against, Nintendo did not discount it. Nintendo maintained the $299 price tag for the Nintendo Switch throughout the holiday season.
