Upcoming Pakistani film Cake, directed by Asim Abbasi, has had us riveted since the unconventional posters, designed by Samya Arif, arrived. From the aesthetics to the familial story that is at the heart of the film to the way every frame draws you in, it is an upcoming film that has created hope that the revival of Pakistani films in Pakistan is not just a circus. Starring Aamina Sheikh and Sanam Saeed as sisters with Adnan Malik essaying the mysterious Romeo, the film is neither your typical romantic comedy nor a love triangle backed with an item song. Set to make its mark in the United Kingdom this March, first with a world premiere at Vue West End in Leicester Square, London and later with a gala presentation at the UK Asian Film Festival, the film has now earned the endorsement of Imran Khan, former cricket super star and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. https://twitter.com/ImranKhanPTI/status/971971625540177920 As the story goes, Khan was invited to preview Cake at a special screening that was held in Rawalpindi. Upon witnessing the film, Khan liked it enough that he tweeted about it. “With the cast of the film Cake, after watching it,” wrote the PTI chief, before adding: “Impressed by both the acting and quality of the film. We have immense untapped potential in the Pakistan film industry.” Obviously, it isn’t very often when Khan endorses a film, which means that Abbasi’s debut feature length film is different than the usual song-and-dance–meets-comedy routine that is seen in your average new age Pakistani film. And given Khan’s popularity, this endorsement should hopefully improve Cake’s standing on the box office when it opens later this month.
