oday’s Google Doodle, celebrates what would have been the 120th birthday of Sergei Eisenstein, also known as the father of montage. Born on January 22, 1898, Eisenstein was a Soviet artist and avantgarde director of several groundbreaking films, including Battleship Potemkin, Strike, and The General Line. Eisenstein is particularly famous for his skills with montage, where he deployed arresting images in sequences of psychological precision. Besides the cinematic effect, his films were famous for another things and that was the theme. His movies often told the story of struggle of downtrodden workers against the ruling class. Eisenstein has two Stalin Prizes to his name, that he won in 1941 for the film Alexander Nevsky and the other in 1946 for the first film of the series “Ivan the Terrible”. He was also the Honored Artist of the RSFSR , and was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1939–for the film “Alexander Nevsky”. Today’s doodle marks a tribute to his pioneering technique, and is inspired by iconic imagery in some of Eisenstein’s films. According to the Google Doodle page, a montage is a technique of editing video in a fast-paced sequence of short shots to transcend time or suggest thematic juxtapositions.
