Islamabad, 1 November 2018 — Shell hosted a major convention at the Serena Hotel to discuss Pakistan’s energy transition. The company invited government representatives, diplomats, business leaders, and academics to share ideas on building a sustainable energy future. More than 50 dignitaries attended the event.
Key Officials Join the Conversation
Senior officials took part in the discussion. The attendees included Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Institutional Reforms; Mr. Sher Afgan Khan, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Energy; Dr. Tanveer Ahmad Qureshi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Energy; and Ms. Uzma Adil, Chairperson of OGRA.
Shell Presents Global Insights
Mr. Roger Bounds, Vice President Strategy & Portfolio at Shell, led the main presentation. He shared insights on global energy trends and examples of successful clean-energy policies. He also offered suggestions tailored to Pakistan’s needs.
Mr. Ajay Shah, Vice President Shell Energy Asia, delivered an LNG outlook. He pointed out that Pakistan ranks among the top ten LNG-importing countries in the world.
Pakistan’s Growing Energy Needs
Pakistan is now the sixth most populous country. As the population grows, energy demand rises quickly. More access to reliable power supports economic activity and helps people improve their standard of living. The audience discussed how Pakistan can meet this demand in a responsible way.
A Call for Collective Action
Mr. Haroon Rashid, Chief Executive and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan, addressed the dual challenge the country faces. He stressed that Pakistan must move toward low-carbon energy to reduce climate risks. At the same time, it must expand access to affordable and dependable energy.
He added that progress is possible when all stakeholders work together. He noted that the convention marked an important step toward that goal.
