‘Joker’ leads Oscar nominations

The 92nd Academy Awards nominees have been unveiled, and Warner Bros.’ DC film Joker leads the pack with a whopping 11 nominations.

The film, which served as a dark origin for the Clown Prince of Crime, was nominated for Best Picture, while director Todd Phillips is in the running for Best Director. Unsurprisingly, shortly after his Golden Globes win, star Joaquin Phoenix has also been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

What’s more, Joker is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (from a script by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver), Film Editing (by Jeff Groth), Cinematography (Lawrence Sher), Costume Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Makeup and Hairstyling. Finally, Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Golden Globe-winning score is also in the running for a Best Original Score Oscar.

The only other comic book film nominated is Avengers: Endgame, which has a single nomination for Best Visual Effects.

The R-rated Joker shattered box office records, earning $1.06 billion worldwide. Previously, David Ayer’s 2016 DC film Suicide Squad won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony airs Sunday, Feb. 9 on ABC.
