Birmingham has been selected to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the biggest sporting event to be awarded to an English city since the London Olympics in 2012.

Louise Martin, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, made the official announcement at a press conference at the Arena Academy in the city on Thursday morning.

Birmingham, which is about 126 miles from London, was the only city to submit a bid before the original deadline on September 30, though it was deemed “not fully compliant” by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
